Geological and Petroleum Technicians provide support to scientists and engineers in exploring and extracting natural resources, such as minerals, oil, and natural gas. They analyze samples of soil and minerals as they search for valuable resources. All technicians share similar duties, but technicians do tend to specialize in one of three areas: fieldwork, laboratory work, and in-office data analysis.
In the field, geological and petroleum technicians use sophisticated equipment such as seismic instruments to gather geological data and collect rock samples for scientific analysis. In laboratories, other technicians analyze the samples for evidence of hydrocarbons, useful metals, or precious gemstones. Based on the laboratory findings, a third set of technicians conducts another layer of data analysis and draws final conclusions.
Are you a problem solver? Do you like working with both technology and your hands? As a Geological & Petroleum Technician you will be expected to work with, or even lead, a team. Precision and high attention to detail will also be essential in this role.
